Posture Braces

When to Use a Posture Brace
Posture braces are fairly safe and easy to use. They are made of fabric and often Velcro, and are designed to force your body into an optimal position. Unless used for long periods of time they have little risk associated to the wearer. Even children can wear them to address injuries or under medical supervision for a chronic condition. Back braces are also often used for heavy lifting to minimize risk of injury. The best long term strategy for good posture  is to increase the strength of your core (back and stomach) muscles and introduce stretching exercises. Yoga is especially suited for this. You do not want your muscles to get weaker because you are using a posture brace all the time. A brace should be used short term to reduce pain or to condition yourself to learn good posture.

When choosing a brace, you should consider why you want to wear one. The brace that you ultimately choose will depend on your goals. For example, a posture brace may not work if your goal is to reduce shoulder pain, or clavicle pain from an accident. If you want to reduce pain you should select a brace that will provide additional support to that specific area of your body. To provide additional support to your back, you may opt to get a brace that supports your upper back and shoulders or one that supports your full back and shoulders. On the other hand, if you want to improve your posture, you should look at posture braces  are specifically  designed  for overall posture improvement. Nowadays, there are also electronic good posture devices which in my opinion are superior to fabric braces for creating good posture long term. This page only focuses on the more traditional fabric posture braces which once again, are short term solutions.  Below are some different popular models.

ShouldersBack Posture Brace
The ShouldersBack posture brace looks similar to a sports bra. It was designed by an orthopedist specifically to correct poor posture and it is especially helpful to those with lower back pain or muscle strain. The ShouldersBack brace features a light-weight material that can easily be hidden under clothing. Because of its comfortable low profile design, this brace can be worn while exercising, working, or any daily activity. The designer claims that this brace can retrain the back to better posture in as little as a day. While I am sure you will get immediate feedback with any posture brace, in reality it will take at least several weeks for you to begin a good posture habit, and then several months to retrain your muscles and neural system. A large disadvantage of this product is that it can be hard to put on if the wearer has arm or shoulder pain or movement issues.

Clavicle Splint
This support looks like a figure eight, and it gently stretches across the back after being looped over the shoulders. It is comfortable to wear, and its shoulder straps feature padding. Its Velcro bands also make it simple to adjust. It works by putting gentle pressure onto the wearer’s shoulders. This pressure pulls their shoulders back, and thus, improves their general posture and reduces their pain.

Saunders Posture Sport Upper Back Support
This highly rated brace covers almost the entire back. It has a waist strap that fights against stooping shoulders. When shoulders are not allowed to stoop, the back naturally goes into a straighter position. Its suspender straps pull the rest of the body into a straighter position that helps to lower pain in the back and shoulders. Most users find that this support is comfortable to wear. For instance, its elastic waistband is easy to adjust and fits the wearer closely. The soft cotton fabric feels great against the skin and is ideal for wearing under clothes. However, it can also be worn over clothes. This makes it easy to slip on and off. This may also be a good choice for people looking for additional back support for work. For people who are struggling with back pain, a brace may be the best and least invasive short term solution for their problem. It reduces pain and helps promote good posture. Regardless of where your pain is, you should be able to find a posture brace that works for you.
